Hugh Newell Jacobsen

'A1' light fixture (Belfer #7215) lighting the Welles Residence.

The Dream House was designed with a unique lighting feature not found in many houses. Because Jacobsen houses employ large volumetric living spaces where ceiling heights can sour as high as 40' from floor to ridge, the method we use to light art on the walls or objects from this height had to be above caliber very flexible. 'A1' is the firms own internal designation for the pendant mounted #7215 Belfer Wedge® Light. It is a small triangular shaped light fixture that hangs from a conduit from the ceiling and is controlled by a dimmer switch. It's primary purpose for the Dream House is to light the entrance Foyer and art above the fireplace. It also has applications in the dining room and master bedroom if those ceilings were chosen by the owners to be open to the ridge. These lights are available through the Belfer company but are not listed (to our knowledge) in the catalog. Your supplier will have to call directly and place the order or be given the name of a local dealer. The most important thing to remember about lighting these rooms are 1. the quality of light that is produced, 2. the attractiveness of the lighting fixture, and 3. Will the owners marriage dissolve because the rare and hard to find light bulb has to be changed. This fixture utilizes standard and common parts and takes both a bayonet Halogen and bayonet incandescent bulb. The lamps can be accessed with a standard a-frame household ladder (Dream House only).

In some cases, depending what is being asked of the A1 to light, it may be required to bend the pendant that the wedge is attached to. Your Dream House electrical plan already indicates the depth from the wall that the A1 should be located. The above diagram is for your electrician or supplier who will bending this pendant. In some cases, Belfer may choose to supply you with a pendant. The pendant is merely a small pipe of most any material and can be painted white AFTER bending.

Dream House shopping list:

6 Belfer Wedge Lights model #7215

Finish: White Eggshell (Or match your wall and ceiling color)

Bulb: 100 or 150 watt Halogen

Switching: Electrician to gang lights in each room together. Dimmers required. Size accordingly for load.

Pendant: Verify in field. Top of wedge should align with top of closet doors on either side of fireplace. Match this height in foyer. Paint pendant white after bending. Flange at ceiling to be as small as possible, but must cover 'J' box. Paint flange white. Locate offset dims on electrical plan.

Optional Diffuser Comb: The Jacobsen office developed with Belfer a special diffuser that would reduce some of the harder edges of light that were produced. It is recommended that this Diffuser Comb be used.

Frosted Glass: We found in some buildings that a frosted glass lens was helpful. This will totally diffuse the light. It can be installed post-facto and the fixture does not have to be removed to put it in. This is not the case with the comb mentioned above.
