Hugh Newell Jacobsen

In 1997, Hugh Jacobsen was given the honor of designing a house for one of America's most prestigious clients, loading image Magazine.

Good architecture shouldn't cost anymore money than bad architecture and should be accessible to anyone who is thinking of building a house. The objective put to Jacobsen was complex: design a house that is truly American, truly modern and truly conventional but flexible.

We will refer you to January's 1998 loading image magazine and what was designed, but the purpose of this page is to assist builders, home owners and perspective buyers of the Dream House with questions, service and details.

As of 12/16/99, 550 1998 Dream Houses have been sold.

A modified Dream House in West Virginia: The owner was careful and meticulous in

expanding the house while maintaining the proportions and integrity of the composition.

This design is very similar to Jacobsen's first scheme for the four bedroom house.

One of the latest Dream Houses to be completed,

this one is in the northern neck of Virginia on the Chesapeake Bay.

F.A.Q.'s about the Dream House:

Can a screen porch be added to the building?

The electrical plan calls for an 'A1' light fixture in the livingroom and foyer. Where can I find this thing?

Why is the laundry room so far away from the bedroom wing? Can it be moved?

FEMA says I have to build my house on piles elevated off the ground. Is this possible?

Some of Mr. Jacobsen's houses do not have gutters on them, I like that look. Can the Dream House be gutterless? Is the word 'gutterless' English?

What is the purpose of the little window eve vents at each gable end?

Where can I find those handsome 8'-0" interior doors?

It has been requested by several owners and builders of the Jacobsen Dream House, that a common group be established so people can share ideas and thoughts on the constructions, budget constraints, strategies, details and so on.  The Dream House quote collection:

Betsy Rosshiem wrote from Williamsburg, Virginia:

"...The work beats on. Today they finally executed the new solution to

putting a 6 foot wide chimney on the house. It's stunning! Many people stood

and watched in amazement as it just kept going up. Some even suggested I

should stop it before it reached maturity. But I kept the faith and let it

fly. I love it! It gives the house such presence."

This one is from an 'architecture review board' in Durham, North Carolina. A Dream House

owner had submitted the plans to the Treyburn Architectural Review Committee and

received this response:

"....This house is a high powered architectural statement, both striking and in many

ways handsome. But innovative, 'striking' architecture has

not fit well at Treyburn and the community has seemed to

flourish through consistency and in many ways "sameness".-Beth Kapil.

The owners are looking for another site and more progressive citizenry.

Some clippings from the HNJ Guestbook about the 1998 Dream House

We are building the 1998 Dream House on a dramatic 48 acre site in the Hudson Valley. We would like to be in contact with anyone else currently building this house--especially if in the Northeast. Thanks. Nina & K. Bailey Freund.

Dear Mr. Jacobsen, We are seriously considering building the 1998 Life Dream House in a mountain location between Chattanooga and Nashville that can be buggy in some summer months. Our question is a follow up to the one posted regarding the addition of a screened porch. Would you consider this as an alternative? Add a pavilion, attached by breezeway (as you recommended)adjacent to the laundry/kitchen/dining room with a screened porch on the dining room end with perhaps storage towards the kitchen end of the porch. If so, which way should the ridge line go? What about a timber framed structure assuming the exterior matched the rest of the house (4" clapboard in our case)? Thank you for a wonderful design and excellent value! Sincerely, Peter Charman
